Fall Session: What is Opera, Anyway?
In our fall session, students will gain knowledge, skills and vocabulary essential to understanding how opera works.
Over 13 weeks, students will learn about topics including Voice Types; Baroque Opera; operas by Italian, French, German, Czech, Russian composers; Composers and Singers of Color; and more. (See fall session schedule below for specifics)
Each zoom session is 90 minutes, and in the culminating 30 minutes of each session, participants will operatic works.
The session is open to students ages 8-18. No prior operatic experience is necessary! Participation in the spring is not required to participate in the fall.
Spring Session: Let's Write an Opera
In our spring session, students will work in small groups to create and perform original operatic works.
Over 10 weeks, students will learn operatic melodies without words, write original stories that suit the melodies, and explore creative ways to present their operas online.
Each zoom session is 90 minutes. Sessions will be spent developing creative skills including singing, acting, and writing. (See spring session schedule below for specifics)
The session is open to students ages 8-18. No prior operatic experience is necessary! Participation in the fall is not required to participate in the spring.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM


WEEK 1
Tuesday February 9th from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern
Students are encouraged to sing a favorite song or tell a favorite story, and we will work together throughout the class to connect those songs and stories into a unified piece. We will discuss the elements that make a story exciting
WEEKS 2 AND 3
Tuesdays February 16th and 23rd from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern
Students will learn textless operatic musical excerpts. We will discuss form, style, and period of the pieces; we will also tie in elements from our fall semester including but not limited to arias, recitatives, courses, languages, voice types, and musical periods.
WEEKS 4 AND 5
Tuesdays March 2nd and 9th from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern
Students will work to create stories that correlate with the musical excerpts that we have learned. We will explore the emotional qualities of each of the excerpts and how they can fit together.
WEEKS 6-9
Tuesdays March 16th, 23rd, 30th, and April 6th from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern
Students will polish practice their zoom operas with teaching artist assistance. They will also work on costume design and “set” design/graphics/illustrations
WEEK 10
Tuesday April 13th from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern
Students will present dress rehearsals to each other in preparation for a culminating performance
PERFORMANCES
Culminating performances will take place in early April. They may be live or presented as videos, depending on how students choose to present their operas
