Let's Write an Opera

Students will work in small groups to create and perform original operatic works.

Over 10 weeks, students will learn operatic melodies without words, write original stories that suit the melodies, and explore creative ways to present their operas online.

Each zoom session is 90 minutes. Sessions will be spent developing creative skills including singing, acting, and writing. (See spring session schedule below for specifics)

The session is open to students ages 8-18. No prior operatic experience is necessary! Participation in the fall is not required to participate in the spring.

Tuesday February 9th  from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern

Students are encouraged to sing a favorite song or tell a favorite story, and we will work together throughout the class to connect those songs and stories into a unified piece. We will discuss the elements that make a story exciting

Tuesdays February 16th and 23rd  from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern

Students will learn textless operatic musical excerpts. We will discuss form, style, and period of the pieces; we will also tie in elements from our fall semester including but not limited to arias, recitatives, courses, languages, voice types, and musical periods.

Tuesdays March 2nd and 9th  from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern

Students will work to create stories that correlate with the musical excerpts that we have learned. We will explore the emotional qualities of each of the excerpts and how they can fit together.

Tuesdays March 16th, 23rd, 30th, and April 6th  from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern

Students will polish practice their zoom operas with teaching artist assistance. They will also work on costume design and “set” design/graphics/illustrations

WEEK 10

Tuesday April 13th  from 4:30-6:00 pm eastern

Students will present dress rehearsals to each other in preparation for a culminating performance

Culminating performances will take place in early April. They may be live or presented as videos, depending on how students choose to present their operas
